Science/environment stories that we have heard every two years for most of my adult life (ie, ignore them): 1) Fusion breakthrough! 2) We're running out of helium! 3) Signs of alien life! 4) Possible cure for cancer! 5) _____________ (what have you heard too often?)

Robots literally do put people out of jobs, though. https://www.nber.org/papers/w23285 (One of the main reasons why this is such a long-running 'myth' is a lot of the public data comes from firms like Accenture/PWC which tend to propagate misleading figures here.)

What if...we used robots to teach people how to do better, higher paying, in demand jobs

Your bosses have a lot of money sunk into fusion research, do you think they think each new breakthrough should be ignored? Research is incremental, it is not an all or nothing proposition, so the knowledge accumulation vector is as relevant or more so than the current position.
