It's mind-blowing that part of the US public believes America is being "exploited" by the rest of the world, or that globalization is a plot against America... The US has been the main architect of globalization, and has always been its primary beneficiary. And it still is.

To clear up, given the replies I'm getting: the narrative I'm talking about isn't "globalization has had serious downsides for some people in the US" (of course it has). It's literally "globalization is a foreign plot in which the US, as a country, is being exploited"

And yes, it's a narrative that is being pushed by representatives of the very elite that benefitted most from globalization -- certain billionaire politicians and millionaire news anchors -- not by disgruntled coal miners.

I'd say trying to trap the UK in a customs union from which it can't escape is a perfectly good reason to complain.

Trouble is, within the next decade they'll be overtaken by a communist state who has, without question, exploited open/free markets by selling huge amounts in exports globally and simultaneously inhibiting imports. So not sure you analysis is entirely correct.

Not to mention the wealthiest country on the planet will soon be one with have an appalling human rights record, imprisons ethnic minorities and political opposition. I think the US is right to tackle that, as it opposes literally everything the US/The West stands for.

While the US is, undoubtedly, one of the primary beneficiaries of globalization (not least, because it prints the global currency and, thus, has limitless credit), not all Americans were benefitted. Ask residents of the Rust-belt who lost all the manufacturing jobs...
