It *took* a long time. We don't know that it necessarily *takes* a long time under all conditions. Cognitive building blocks are energetically expensive and the resulting trade-off will not be worth it under all conditions.

I really like how some neuroscientists refer to memory as a forecasting system. Remembering and predicting are basically the same; although the past has more constraints. It is enlightening to view it this way.
