If we keep building markets & algorithms that reward raw popularity & virality, over the long run, we're indirectly selecting for the traits that bring it about: outrageousness, addictiveness, appeal to the lowest common denominator.
What we choose to reward today shapes the world we'll inhabit tomorrow. We define the evolutionary pressure of the tech ecosystem. And we're converging towards a world where every app is viral & hyperaddictive, where every piece of content is a cognitively-optimized fake shocker
We need calm, thoughtful technology. Technology we can use for our own fulfilment, not technology that uses us to spread itself
But do social media apps actually reward raw popularity? The algorithms and reward functions implemented are secret. There is evidence that content that is more bombastic and less informative becomes more widely spread. But who is to say to what extent?
Turbo-capitalism, that's (imho) the problem. Either we go for a more ethical concept of how the market works and operates, or we put way more money (and restriction) into public, long term and long sighted, research.
Right now, everyone has a profit motive to destroy civil society. It seems increasingly clear that this is the sort of market failure where product/content creators won’t do better unless there’s government intervention that forces them to bear these negative externalities.

well deserved thought..! We should build our future, we’re not here to break our future! We should consider our long term goals rather to overwhelm with short term outcome which are always ephemeral..
