Without AutoML, you essentially hand-engineer the hyperparameters and network configuration. That's not GAI! That's expert systems! What's so new about that? Only thing is higher tuned accuracy with more data. Deep Learning is essentially a Turing's 1940's B-type network. 42

Unfortunately, there aren't enough mentors for people with a Bachelor's degree who want to pursue hard core research in this area. Those in select few countries might be an exception.

Advice for those of us not currently in the field and didn’t go to school for it but are interested in contributing to ML/AI/etc? Go back to school?

In undergrad CS we often don’t have classes on ML/AI. For fundamentals like programming, program. For fundamentals like linear algebra, 3Blue1Brown/MITOCW. There are lots of amazing lectures online about all ML/DL. Making this trifecta valuable is practice, so build something!
