Probably around ~100B has been sent on self-driving research since 2005 -- the supermajority of that after the adoption of DL in that space (which started in 2014 and took off in 2015). The real thing is still a few years away.

I think most of it is money well spent, because we will eventually reap the rewards, and the rewards are significant. But it goes to show just how hard it is to build AI systems that interface with a wide range of situations in the real world with little margin for error.

I imagine it's a lot easier if you can create entire test cities to try things out in! (and have a billion people happy to give you their personal data) 🇨🇳

Tasks like computer vision and natural language understanding are replicating standalone tasks doable by infants & toddlers. An AI that makes 16-year-old drivers obselete is harder than people think...even if you start out believing it's pretty goddamn hard to begin with.

Is it really worth it? For that cost wouldn't it be better to update road architecture and infrastructure to simplify the problem of autonomous driving (I mean roads are repaired every few years anyway, it'd be easy to roll out sensor grids and smart lane markers)?

A few years way...R u kidding? How do u know dat SDC will be robust to all the weather problems like hail, snow, rain, sleet, and fog? Have you ever programmed a SDC before? It is basically memorization and doesn't generalize to new roads. Most of the work is in the warm states.
