Startups that are hyping up magical AI/AGI fantasies in order to raise money are one of the main causes of the problem. Because they shape the public discourse. They shape the perceptions of decision-makers. The media is more than happy to relay -- the media loves outrageous hype

They must sell AI to their investors to value themselves more, many of them have not even developed more than a few modifications to the examples that frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, Chainer for example bring 
Latest big moves on AGI investments may be a sign of the last attempts of a fainting promise to regain relevance. Investment for chimeric non founded goals may die fast. DeepMind is moving into more applied subjects

I wouldn't conflate those pursuing a clear path to a distant goal, with those profiting from general fraud. Having people willing to 100% waste money is crucial to unlocking future opportunities. Fraud will proliferate, but the alternative is oligopolies withholding progress
I agree 100% This is why I founded http://www.sensor.link and am working to create some understanding of how we could set up regulation that would allow oversight and audit-ability in the smart sensing / AI space. It’s now or never !
It's crazy because any company with access to a good CV API and some clever electro/mechanics is capable of going all the way to AGI, with the right mindset.
