I could never really understand the logic behind the modern notion of "spoilers". For most stories, knowing the overall structure in advance helps you understand and appreciate its unfolding, catch foreboding details you would otherwise have missed, etc.

Romeo and Juliet basically starts by telling you that two young folks will fall in love and it will be tragic and their deaths will bring peace between their two warring families. Shakespeare didn't think you could enjoy the story if you didn't know that context

"The Day of the Jackal" was such an effective thriller because you knew DeGaulle was not assassinated, the tension was finding out how the assassin would fail.

What about criminal/mystery stories. I never read one myself, but the whole fun is that you don't know the ending and when it is revealed you have an ah moment. Also are jokes still funny if you know the punchline?

>I don't derive any particular joy from being surprised by unexpected turns Maybe not *that* but what about when you think you know what kind of story something is and is about, and it escapes the box you unknowingly put it into? It feels like the ground vanished beneath me!

That's the point. Most good stories don't make sense if you have all the information from the very beginning. The context includes unknown stuff. Moreover, a movie is more than a story: it's an experience. If you mix the order that info is supplied, you lose the experience.
