Twitter is this remarkable environment where people whose experience of a topic consists of 2 random blog posts are adamant that they understand it better than researchers who spent decades working on it...

Not just in a "I disagree with you" kind of way, more like "you are an idiot and I am going to explain to you the most basic facts of your own field since it doesn't occur to me you might have heard about it"

It's not twitter, it's everywhere like that. Twitter is unprecedented in exposing and revealing the depth of the problem.

But the most important rule of twitter is ... not every debate should be continued beyond a certain point, once the point is made sufficiently, retire having advocated for your side as best you can✌️

It’s moved into the real world. I recently had a guy at an airport bar lecture me on linear regression.

Some nobody on Twitter once asked late @joeerl if he ever wrote a complex program. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody would be willing to lecture on algorithms to Knuth.

My guess is that this because of misaligned incentives. Being able to get it right in twitter is considered to have higher reward than the punishment of getting it wrong. This hugely manifests in stupid tweets like https://twitter.com/naval/status/1089969197264777217?s=21 … or the ramblings of @elonmusk.

          Rajhans Samdani added,

Twitter is a much better resumé than LinkedIn.
