For those saying the idea of hand-coded rules / knowledge wouldn't scale: there's 7B people, and they all possess common sense / intelligence (mostly). A $1B investment can buy you hundreds of millions of hours of labor. Fire up the ontology furnaces

If we only had to encode knowledge once, this might work. But our experience with expert systems showed that the knowledge required continual maintenance (like all software and data-based systems). The cost of ownership of hand-coded knowledge is high

Arguably, the self-maintained, always up-to-date knowledge system is the Internet (things like Quora, Twitter, Google search, Wikipedia, and the sea of content they refer to). It is pretty intelligent. We have, in fact, delegated a lot of business logic to it, across many fields

The Internet is knowledge rich, not intelligent. Intelligence is the process of manipulating knowledge. We make less effort to store information as our intelligence relies more on ad hoc Internet queries. If the Internet becomes intelligent we will make less effort reasoning too

(Somehow this process already started as we incorporate the reasoning done and reported by other people while facing a similar problem)
