Before burning €1Bn on trying to simulate the human brain, wouldn’t it make sense to first prove that we can build simulation models of simple worms and insects? Even after we managed to map out entire connectome of C.elegans or Drosophila, we cannot simulate them convincingly.https://twitter.com/edyong209/status/1153370464531755008 …

Right, but even this would still be simulating thoughts, not developing thoughts

Even today, AI interacts with some portion of the civilization which already exists -- through text, video, robotics, etc. Interface to the reality is not the hardest part in creating the mind in the computer.

The universe that has to be simulated can probably be way smaller and simpler than the actual one if you are just interested in learning how to perform day-to-day tasks.

Representation of any linguistic object is embedded in the context graph that spans entire universe, and the some. There is an astronomical number of things which could be referred to, out of blue sky, in the very next line of any ongoing dialog.

No need to simulate a new universe, just connect the simulated brain inputs with a real webcam + micro and its motor outputs to robotic wheels or muscles, and let the robotic AI "feel" our universe (universe APIs are royalty-free!).
