Before burning €1Bn on trying to simulate the human brain, wouldn’t it make sense to first prove that we can build simulation models of simple worms and insects? Even after we managed to map out entire connectome of C.elegans or Drosophila, we cannot simulate them convincingly.https://twitter.com/edyong209/status/1153370464531755008 …

Ten years ago today, at a TED conference, a neuroscientist claimed that he could simulate the human brain in ten years. And, er, that didn’t happen. Here’s a look at why, and whether the goal even makes any sense. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/07/ten-years-human-brain-project-simulation-markram-ted-talk/594493/ …

To simulate the brain, you must first simulate the universe.

Simulating the universe is probably easier than simulating the brain.

It is fortunate that we have the universe already, and can tap its functionality.

So true! I think of it literally every time I collide a complex object (like a hand) with anything else. Lots of nice distributed computation!

I.e. simulating the brain (if you could), in isolation, would amount to mere noise. To develop thoughts, you will need to simulate its sensorimotor space and an environment of comparable sensorimotor richness as ours. Including other humans, our civilization, etc. The universe...
