Your justifications for continuing to support (for free) the predatory publishing system are part of the problem. Rather, they are the entirety of the problem. You have power -- you have all of the power here. It's your choice. This is the world you created.

I've not met an academic who won't freely share them if they're directly contacted and asked. They'll jsit shoot it over via email. 100% just make contact. Certainly not in the sciences etc.

Why is called science? Because it is reproducible, open to comment, and written in a universal language.

This is how we can bring creative innovation . If someone can make use of that paper for making the world a better place by using it in a different domain or application, then it's totally worth it.

How to achieve maximal audience for a very innovative AI paper? Making them available for free? Or through a predatory publisher?
-
Both. Simple.

Problem is that as an academic you have to publish in the royalty/pay-wall system. But every academic I mailed about their paper has sent me a copy free of charge in less than 2-3 days after sending email

Imagine having to email ~20 different authors to access their work. Then imagine as an author receiving tons of emails/day of people asking for your article, esp if you have published several. Short story. Just have a freely accessible copy on a hub somewhere
