1950-1990: the dominant implicit metaphor for the mind was a computer, with formal programs and explicit knowledge bases. 2010s: the dominant implicit metaphor for the mind is now that of a freshly initialized neural network deriving knowledge and skills from "training data"

(both are hopelessly wrong, and it is disheartening to see the blank slate NN analogy be just as uncritically accepted by the average student today as the computer metaphor was a few decades ago)

Well, if the conceptualize part is done in math (as opposed to technology/tools) first, then it might not be as "insidious" ?

and very old. In the 19th century, people drew analogies to telegraph networks and railroad networks. As with other conceptual biases, we need to work to overcome them. One way is to combine many different conceptual models (at least it prevents fixating on any one).

This is nothing. In India, everything digital is controlled by the Telegraph Acts from 125+ years ago.

Technology explicitly inspired by (a simplist understanding of) neurobiology. It's like an ouroboros of metaphors leading nowhere except back to the starting point.

I mean, this is arguably true of all science. Concepts develop in small increments, by analogy with other, existing concepts.

There is no correct metaphor of consciousness via utilities, since it’s penultimately objective. Try Spinoza though, regarding natural forces

Thankfully there are counter-examples, where biology is used as the starting point and new tools are created by inspiration. One such is the spiking neural network research at AUT in Auckland, New Zealand
