  For me, kind of placebo effect. It actually helps for a last push w/o secondary effects. I guess there's also some Pavlovian conditioning involved.

  Sometimes people consume coffee not just for the caffeine, but for the taste. Nowadays, because of technology, there are many good tasting decafs. If you thing about coffee as a herbal tea (or tea w/o caffeine) hopefully it will make sense for you.
