Exactly like our body & senses. We can perceive a slice of the EM spectrum, certain chemicals in the air we breathe, soundwaves, etc. We can run on land, climb mountains, swim across rivers. But thinking that this is all there is to the universe -- that's a deficit of imagination

It is, more accurately, all there is to *our* universe.

Our intelligence is specialized for the same reasons that our sensorimotor affordances are specialized: it evolved in a very specific context. It is general within this context -- not applicable anywhere else. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect universality from adhoc mutations.

Agree, A way to look at this is there are different kinds of intelligence, "general intelligence" - very rudimentary but forms building blocks like self-awareness, self-preservation, interacting with the environment. Allows an agent to safely interact with its environment
-
More advanced kinds of intelligence are build on top these building blocks and may be stacked

"Intelligence" just is model building to infer sensorimotor affordances. What else would it be?
-
my way of seeing this is: at some point, organisms began to build abstractions on the foundational intelligence you describe. then: abstractions on abstractions like, sentience emerges from sapience emerges from intelligence emerges from life?

In general, everything has a context. Absolute generality is the province of God.

So this surely true and yet not true. In a world where processing now - and accumulating over time - a growing variety of competencies, for no switching cost is an adaptive advantage, general intelligence is ... an advantageous specialisation.
