2000-2015: software eating the world: our lives & societal infrastructure move to a digital, connected, information-based substrate, enabling increased automation 2015-: algorithms eating the world: our lives get mediated by automation, with poorly understood emergent properties

Algorithms, and in general "AI", will increasingly serve as our sole interface to a world that is increasingly made of information. As a result, the algorithmic medium, which at scale no one really understands, is becoming the new nexus of power and conflict

This brings up to mind a scary imagery of digital world that is as hostile to humans as nature was to first humans. We will be reduced to hunters and gatherers of digital resources in the sea of algorithmic content.

Digital landscape will be as incomprehensible to us as nature was in prehistoric times. We will be creating stories how that digital world works, just as greeks did. And we will follow our tribe leader anywhere to survive.

I have yet to grasp in what form these conflicts would be. Talking about tf vs pytorch?

In 2012 I participated in a small group discussion led by @doctorow. I chanced into it, but he painted a picture I've thought about often in the years since, and that has changed the way I see the world.

What exactly is the difference between the traditional software vs AI? The former is logical, rule-based, deterministic execution on behalf of human? The latter is purely learned, black box?
