You don't need to know everything. You don't really need a formal background in this or that -- though it helps. You don't even need a PhD. You do, however, need to be constantly learning. Be curious. Read books. Don't be "too busy" to learn, or otherwise proud of your ignorance

You don't need a PhD, but in highly technical areas a good PhD is a reliable sign the person has got what it takes to face v difficult problems

That’s what I thought...until I started job hunting recently! As far as I can tell, my PhD in math modeling hasn’t helped my data science at all.
