There is a world of difference between a startup founder choosing to work long hours to make their company succeed, and a fresh-out-of-college startup employee with a low salary & meager stock options being required to work long hours. One is ownership, the other is exploitation.

Working hard when you’re fresh out of college is s good thing, not a bad thing.

Work hard but on your own project then (eg a startup idea, open source or charity).

...meager stock options that will be heavily diluted as additional funding is raised - unless this fresh-out-of-college employee sticks around for the long term (i.e. gambles), while holding on to that lower-than-market salary

Yup . Work life balance is important but devoting overtime ( without any pay ) should be at one's personal discretion .

If your choices are limited (due to location or skills), it can be a reasonable stepping stone to better opportunities in the future.
