Based on requests for clarification, we would like to let you know that the statement "in fact, the prototype of PyTorch was literally a fork of Chainer" is False.
This was from a comment by a PyTorch dev made a few days after the release of PyTorch (January 2017), which stated, "the PyTorch autograd codebase started as a fork of Chainer, which was then rewritten to C". Apologies if that dev was mistaken.
Thanks for the clarification and understanding. It was likely a misunderstanding with the dev (that was later resolved, but internet history remains).
