Still pretty bad compared to cycling.
Cycling is great, but it does not work for long distances, nor is it accessible to everyone. Rail is a scalable and inclusive solution.
This does not even account for land-use-related energy waste or health costs of cars, which also appear to overwhelmingly favor rail.
Subway makes sense for dense urban environments, may be for top 5 or 6 cities in us. But how about for something like Austin or Madison, where suburbs are huge. How would it help in intra national road trips. Rural, semi urban people are not going to let go of cars anytime soon.
Rural and suburbs areas? Cars and motorcycles. Try live in Kanagawa or Yokohoma or Chiba, around 20-100km from Tokyo. You’ll be glad if you own even a lowly compact car. Trains are as optimal as the density of an area, and millions of commutes paying for them every day.
Public transport has two problems, no privacy & vulnerable to terrorism, but if you can tolerate even less privacy, scanning, then the terrorism danger can be mitigated. There is also a higher risk of disease being spread, but there are air conditioning designs that reduce it.
Tokyo wouldn’t exist without rail. You can’t move that many people by car, and you don’t have the space to store all the cars.
