This is not a comment about GANs, but about academic credit assignment. Winner takes all + flag planting being far more rewarded than adding value.
-
To be fair, it's quite mixed. In our field, we've seen credit go to the people who write a good textbook, the people who get eye-catching results, the people who get a paper into Nature or Science, the people who write a readable paper, etc.

This is a big part of the reason I was happy to leave academia. Academia was about the credit, not about the work -- and even the credit assignment wasn't done in a conscious way the community was proud of.

To quote Schmidhuber, "Christopher Columbus became famous not because he was the first person to discover America, but because he was the last person to discover America"

credit assignment is not only a problem of academia. films are credited after director. Whereas games after studio. Board games creators were forbidden to put their name on their work and they had protest to earn that right. Who\What to credit and how, is a long standing issue.

The Nobel award had issues with Higgs discovery, because they award individuals and not teams(CERN). Partly, because It is much easier to associate, remember and be inspired by individuals than team of nameless people.
