Where are the bookstores, though? This is not rhetorical, I can count quality bookstores on my fingertips (e.g. Boston area has zero good ones). The quirky ones are understandably small, the larger ones usually carry books with the depth of Pinker or Gladwell or Harari.

publishing software may have the most experimentation. In the internet era it went from shrink wrapped products in a store, to freeware/shareware/demo, to subscriptions. Along the way there has been open source, DRM, closed hardware, etc. Will a rights-based model endure?

My vague feeling is that most web tech fundamentally fails because web is effectively online for consumer (they watch us do stuff) and offline for consumer (we can not see the entirety of what is being shown). With books and offline programs there is symmetry. Everything is there
