As @GreatDismal wrote, "the future is already here — it's just not evenly distributed". I would add that multiple futures are possible, and you can see previews of them around the world.
I think San Francisco is one of these possible futures. And it's scary.

IMO the Bay Area is more like a regression to the most common worldwide human experience, which is breathtaking income inequality. It's the norm in the developing world. Most of the US crawled out of that in the post-war era, but big chunks are sliding back.
