I think consciousness isn't a requirement for high intelligence, and the AI agents of the future won't be conscious by default. Inversely, creatures with relatively low intelligence may possess some degree of consciousness.https://twitter.com/VrishabhLakhani/status/1120849174990344192 …

I'm really curious about your views on artificial consciousness, please share some thoughts!

I see consciousness as a behavioral guidance mechanism similar to emotions. Emotions, like consciousness, aren't a requirement for intelligence, and strong AI won't have feelings by default. But both consciousness & emotions are quite useful for embodied creatures like ourselves.

I also see consciousness as both a qualitative and quantitative attribute: there is a threshold that a system has to cross in order to be conscious at all (0 to 1 -- a thermostat isn't conscious), and past that, systems may be more or less conscious.

You might need here either a definition of consciousness or high intelligence for this statement to make any sense. You can't have high intelligence without reflection and introspection. These two are characteristics of consciousness.

Yeah, especially the definition of intelligence is important.

I highly recommend Peter Watts' blog, and his novels Blindsight and Echopraxia, where he explores the nature of consciousness, and what it would be like to have intelligence without consciousness. His SF is diamond hard.

I loved Blindsight. Didn't read the follow up yet. But thought the same thing when I read the tweet.

innate behaviors -> conditioning (sentience) -> intelligence (consciousness) *conditioning is a sign of a mind separate from body *intelligence is based on stored knowledge

Dogs are good at remembering faces/people, but without an ability to externalize that information (to formalize it), I lean toward that being conditioning rather than knowledge/intelligence.

Indeed. Just as intelligence has no requirement for Wisdom. Sadly and much to the chagrin of the rest of us.

Well first we need to define consciousness preferably in mathematical terms.
