90% of the time, when an engineer (or researcher) uses X to solve Y, it's a case of "I kind of know X" rather than "I have evidence that X is an appropriate solution in this case"

Not so fast. While I’m a huge advocate for using the technique you’re excited about at the moment (as a means to learn it), let’s not forget that our belief in how amenable the problem is to said technique is biased by our excitement level. Was that not the original point?

My point was that there's a big difference, in terms of motivation, between: 1) Having a problem to solve and deciding to use some tool because you already "kind of know it"; and 2) Having mastered a tool (perhaps your own creation) and looking for good applications of it.
