90% of the time, when an engineer (or researcher) uses X to solve Y, it's a case of "I kind of know X" rather than "I have evidence that X is an appropriate solution in this case"

In research, at least, a third possibility is that you really know and love technique X, and have therefore sought out problems that might be good applications of X, and Y seems like a really good candidate. (Which of course doesn't imply X is the _best_ method for Y.)

A lot of times I find constrained by 1. Fires burning that need a quick fix 2. Time 3. Budget I literally just ran into a wall today because of this! I did find Z though which worked bettee

Any method X has details one needs to know to configure it well for target problem Y. Of course one should first read literature on previous attempts. Replicate one strong previous solution, try your own idea using what you know, move from there into less familiar terrain.
