You guys got it all wrong. 西瓜 is Chinese; Japanese call it スイカ (suika,水瓜 in kanji)

The funny thing is not why they use 西 instead of 水, but the way they pronounce it. 西=sei, 水=sui and guess what, 西瓜 is pronounced as "suika" ;)
