Starting for-profit startups that raise insane amounts of capital based on the promise that they will "build AGI" -- the mystical AGI of tech legends -- isn't new. The bait-and-switch and the pitch "we'll save humanity from this oh-so-dangerous ML stuff" is quite innovative tho.

Usually the pitch is just "we're going to make so much money". They're startups after all. Transparency of intent is always a good thing.

A company that starts with "V" was founded in 2010 and raised $122M since. While they did mislead investors and the public ("we're building AGI and we're going to have a human-level vision system in 5 years" (said in 2011)), they did not do so with such absolute shamelessness.

Nowadays, our classifiers are really good at classifying, but even if you stitched them together in some meaningful way, their general cognitive abilities would be lackluster. We're missing fundamental internal pieces of cognition required for AGI.

The folks who are like "we'll save humanity by deliberately NOT building AGI" are the cleverest of the bunch, imo.

Every venture capitalist should take “AI for Everyone” from @deeplearningai_ and @coursera to be able to smell this pitch.

Didn’t you see the language model? Just a few more GPUs and reddit posts to train on and we’re there.

I find there is nothing more disgusting for humanity than @openai trying to accelerate AGI in the name of “safe AI” regardless of whether they are nonprofit or not. Latest move shows they are crooks
