These past few decades, there's been an ongoing cultural transition from "reach happiness by buying things" to "reach happiness by buying experiences". The mass market interpretation of the new trend seems almost just as superficial, consumerist, and bad for the planet as before

Maybe the next few decades will see Western culture realize that money in itself can't directly procure happiness... being at peace with yourself and exercising compassion towards others will help you more than all the money in the world. Easier said than practiced though...

But for this cultural shift to happen, someone needs to be telling this story. At scale. In our world, cultural narratives are told by brands, mainly. Which is why the answer is always "buy X to be happy and fulfilled".
