Unpopular opinion: research is about developing new knowledge (reliable new knowledge, that will survive future contact with reality -- something approximating truth). Research isn't about setting up PR events or capturing the media's attention.

But these days it is important to sell it. Just like testla and edison. Its all about convincing people about your ideas and in that perception matters a lot. I totally agree what you say, but sadly world does not function like this. Most often than we as a researcher die in vain

Isn't PR just for increasing interest in the field(with increasing funding) and inspiring people to enter a field. Without them the field will naturally decrease, not that's a bad thing. I mean there are people in pure mathematics working on very remote problems.
