Unpopular opinion: research is about developing new knowledge (reliable new knowledge, that will survive future contact with reality -- something approximating truth). Research isn't about setting up PR events or capturing the media's attention.

Judge research based on the significance of what was learned, that we didn't previously know, not on the amount of media hype. PR-centric research is a waste of our collective time, and when I come across it I regard it as I would Kardashian news -- it has the same substance.

oh my, Google is probably the biggest contributor to overhyping ML research in recent years. Phrases like "mimicking brain", "mother neurons" etc could be found throughout Google's publications. For instance, Microsoft papers are way more pleasant and down to the point usually.

The funniest thing is that all those hype phrases could be mostly found in the abstracts, introductions of the papers, and not the main context of the papers itself lol. It looks like as if there has been a coordinated effort at Google to overhype the ML papers they publish.

I totally agree, but I feel like the academic system is encouraging researchers to focus on PR. Moreover, making significant contributions is more difficult than doing PR, thus doing PR has a greater ROI (investment = time) than doing real science.

E.g. a title probably that didn’t generate buzz “On the electrodynamic of moving bodies”. Probably no tweet on it if there was twitter back then.

These two things are orthogonal. Both research and pr can benefit a [machine learning] company

For many many firms, engineering is about moving the company forward. Research is just a showpiece, or a set of entertaining stories for the clients.

Appreciate the phrase "something approximating truth." A sentiment that's faded.

When you are funded publicly, unfortunately it is, because of you do not create a wow in the media, you will not get your funding. A great example is the climate change research. If you carefully read the studies, many contradict each other, but we somehow have a consensus.
