Cults and totalitarian regimes require you to hold certain key beliefs that are manifestly absurd -- not because the belief itself matters, but because believing it serves as a litmus test. If you express belief in an absurdity, that makes you a faithful who can be relied upon.

If you require evidence and arguments before you believe something, there's no telling when you'll stop following orders. That makes you potentially subversive, and you should be ostracized...

Importantly, it also serves as a litmus test in the other direction: if a person or system places great importance in your belief in something that makes clearly no sense, they don't have your best interest in mind. It's not about the content of these beliefs, it's about control.

This is a subtweet of something, I'll let you figure it out... Try examining your nonsensical beliefs one by one, and asking yourself where they came from -- who wanted you to believe this and why?

The ultimate hack. Having you do something you think you are doing because its aligned with your beliefs but without questioning the beliefs on one hand and on the other the complexity of systemic effects of your activity.

"Try examining your nonsensical beliefs one by one, and asking yourself where they came from" Not an easy task. Everybody holds some beliefs that they are not aware of. Specially wrt why their values are "the right values". Thread:https://twitter.com/Prigoose/status/1086702315459858432?s=19 …

We all have memories and beliefs that have been in our headspace for so long they become like water (in the sense of David Foster Wallace's This is Water). We don't even notice ourselves thinking about them...they just come and go in our heads

My most absurd belief is, that I know enough to be able to reliably predict the future and understand complex systems well enough to proscribe their use to others. However it is the best I have to work with.

"prescribe". 😳 Well actually either is problematic.

Very wise and well phrased. This point would help when I see others repeat lines from an authoritarian regime. I've heard academics from China call for a "scientific approach" to assessing their "reeducation" camps, as if journalists would just make it up. https://www.economist.com/briefing/2018/05/31/china-has-turned-xinjiang-into-a-police-state-like-no-other …
