We think of our body as purely controlled by our mind, but really, the mind is a device that the body added to itself to extend what it could do -- to improve its evolutionary fitness

Perhaps in the future our AI assistants will think of their humans as we think of our bodies -- an appendage to be used as an interface to act in the material world, that they fully control

Or perhaps that they don’t fully control. Consider the prefrontal cortex vs the limbic cortex. One can decide when to breathe but not to stop breathing entirely. When extrapolating a 4th cognitive layer it’s logical to assume the priors will remain, at least for some time.

Using AI assistance to augment existing cognitive abilities in a physically existing body seems much more probable than some sort of completely digital AGI entity at this point.

This is a nice tweet but there is no evolutionary explanation for “the mind” at all, at least not one that warrants the credibility typically associated with “science”.

AI assistants might promote characteristics for the human appendages they control which promote their own propagation in an evolutionary manner.

Yes; have been considering how a personal AI represents an inversion and expansion of the self

We don’t have to wait for AI for that. Primitive technology like houses and fire have survived and replicated across generations and cultures by giving humans benefits. We are an instruments for technology and so is technology for us.
