This reminds me of a place in my home town: a Roman village that got burned down. Original Roman name is unknown and the modern name translates to “black field”. There may be many of those sites in the former Gaul:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzenacker_Roman_Museum …

Most villas in Europe burned down during the great invasions. The charred rubble would give the land a dark color that lingered for many centuries. I imagine there would be many places just like this elsewhere, down to the name
