The short-sighted approach to mastering a topic is to dedicate all of your time and energy to study in depth what has been written about it so far. The long-sighted approach is to study a range of interconnected fields, and form your own mental models through relevant analogies.

I think a majority of people in my field spend too much time reading preprints, and not enough time reading books. All kinds of books.

Could you recommend a book you’ve read recently?

Build a foundation of knowledge rather than skipping to the end and reimplementing what someone else has done. 👍🏼 For AI I think everyone should start with biology and evolutionary theory.

I will read several books on machine learning, leadership, philosophy, languages, and math next year Zero preprints. Thanks for the advice.

I've been rather liking books that are older than me. Every year a slightly smaller slice of "all the books" but I have a massive backlog :)

Its a fast moving field though. So until books are updated, we rely on blog posts...and twitter

So maybe it’s not wise to go to one of those “AI” schools? Although I don’t know much about what their curriculum is, it maybe a bit too narrow and biased towards certain ideas.

I have personally found PhD theses to be really helpful since they synthesize the field from it's origins and sometimes in cross disciplinary ways. Much different than papers.
