I think a majority of people in my field spend too much time reading preprints, and not enough time reading books. All kinds of books.

Analogies can give you a false feeling you understand an issue. Case in point: looking at Watergate as a guide to our current situation. Granted, there are similarities, but in the end, Trimp is not Nixon and 2018 is not 1973

All learning is built on prior interconnected knowledge (and attitudes). Beating around the bush is more time-consuming and rewarding because you get to experience different points of view - not necessarily the best way to master a topic. What's important is to remain curious.
-
No the problems is we never know when beating around the bush is not actually getting beaten inside the busy itself. We never had economic drive or time limits for producing the great ideas that changed the world the most; we developed them slowly without strict purpose.

Interesting thought. Not completely the same but reminds what Elon said a while ago.pic.twitter.com/SJCZvA3imy

IMO beginning with the short-sighted approach and then and only then mix it with the long-sighted approach is the best way to go.

This is why all the old scientists were experts in many different fields. It was much easier to learn everything in a given field. Too much specialisation now.
-
Generally too much information for a normal human, maybe even a genius, to acquire in one lifetime. Without specialization no new information could be acquired, but who's going to connect the pieces?
