It's fascinating how manichean most media narratives are, splitting people between the good guys and the bad guys, especially when there no good guys to be found. And how one person's category can switch from one to the other from story to story, based on who else is involved

Perhaps, but even before social media there were people that cared more one way or the other and tried to act. Social media just means we’re intimately in touch with that in real time.

Are you saying there are actually no sides most of the time? How about situations (never mind how they are covered by news) dealing with issues like refugees and migrants and racist border policies and other overt racisit policies?

When it comes to news related to what the US president does, there are often two sides, precisely because the US president plays tribal politics, and aims for strong emotional responses. But most news aren't like that, and it's rare for good actors and bad actors to be clear cut.

The bulk of American population has been through 2 generations of mass media as driver for consumer culture, and 25+ yrs of "infotainment". Capacity for *human* deep learning and focused attention has broadly atrophied.

I guess that way of splitting and conditioning our opinion about the news is, for the media, the most effective way to engage our attention, making it "easier" for us to get quick conclusions...
