I'm not sure why college is so expensive in the US. Tuition is clearly not the cost of education itself; effective study is very cheap, especially in our day and age. The richest country in the world can afford to educate its youth for free, like various less-opulent countries dohttps://twitter.com/KamalaHarris/status/1075502535409065984 …

$1,465,000,000. That’s the new record outstanding U.S. student loan debt reached last month. It’s outrageous. Students in America deserve to be able to go to college without being weighed down by mountains of debt. It’s time for tuition-free college.

In a sane world, the rise of computers and the Internet would have dramatically cut the cost of actual education. What happened instead?pic.twitter.com/ok8HOFsETD

It's worth remembering that the best education happens on the Internet. It has been true for the past decade. And it's dirt cheap.

It's almost like the system is designed to create debt slaves.

Runaway administrative costs, AFAICT. It’s certainly not going to professor salaries.

No, that has been debunked (it’s part, but not enough to explain the growth). Main cause is the pull-back of government (mainly state) subsidization of public universities.

You say it like it’s a fact, though I’m sure many disagree... hands-on experience first, then you can debate online courses and tutorials vs a rigorous in-person curriculum

😁 My five kids agree. But it does help that they are a group, individual people need a substitute for that interaction, however there are options via the web for that too.

It’s maybe true only for motivated ones. Many may go for Netflix instead to get their education.

The rise in education costs in America is a travesty. And we could pay for everyone who wants it to have a quality higher education. Democratic candidates for president backed free college education to varying degrees. GOP has been waging a war on education for a generation

As a university professor, I often ask myself why I am better than a video and some practice assignments on the internet. I’ve come to realize I am not here for the top 10% (remember we are not typical of the broader population). The rest need a support structure...
