I'm not sure why college is so expensive in the US. Tuition is clearly not the cost of education itself; effective study is very cheap, especially in our day and age. The richest country in the world can afford to educate its youth for free, like various less-opulent countries dohttps://twitter.com/KamalaHarris/status/1075502535409065984 …

$1,465,000,000. That’s the new record outstanding U.S. student loan debt reached last month. It’s outrageous. Students in America deserve to be able to go to college without being weighed down by mountains of debt. It’s time for tuition-free college.

In a sane world, the rise of computers and the Internet would have dramatically cut the cost of actual education. What happened instead?pic.twitter.com/ok8HOFsETD

It's worth remembering that the best education happens on the Internet. It has been true for the past decade. And it's dirt cheap.

Picketty explains it: they take it simply because they can. Or until somebody stops them taking it. It is simple theft.

The admin layer is often thick, and students may expect big stadiums, better facilities than you had.

Expensive college fosters inequality. For some Americans, that’s not a bug, but a feature.

The USA works by using unique a form of entrapment, it is a hyper competitive culture that embodies the idea of "survival by merit and effort" You need to play the game to get ahead but the rules mean that you end up indentured in one way or another until you are very successful.

College is so expensive because the government guarantees a loan to anyone who wants to pursue a college degree, guaranteeing student loans creates high demand for Colleges thus inflating their tuition's costs. https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1075915353912307712 …

3- This increase in spending wasn't met with an increase in faculty members, or the number of classes the student needs to attend. But it correlated with a 3 fold increase in administrators! And greater spending on sports facilities and luxurious building.

It's mostly due to bloated administration and sports subsidies. There are more administrator's than teaching faculty in many Universities. Also most college athletic teams cost way more than they bring in.
