Many problems seem to come from the literal application of a rule while forgetting the purpose of the rule. The purpose of a rule should always override the rule itself. It's useful to come up with rules for yourself (shortcuts), but remember the first principles...

So if you build an Ark, welcome every animal on board. Except the termites. Because if the termites board, everyone will die, and that defeats the purpose of your Ark.

Law 101, laws are not perfect and in order to deal with exceptions to any law the spirit and intent of the law is to be taken into consideration. Now read the spirit and intent of all US laws, the Declaration of Independence. With this, how many bad laws can you identify?

This talk is super relevant if you haven't seen it: https://vimeo.com/155525207  The problem is that it's hard to put the purpose of rules in computers.

It's not hard. It can't be done. "Purpose," like ethics, like excellence more broadly, cannot be coded. Spirit cannot be materialized. The failure to acknowledge these things is a hallmark of AI gospel and a big part of the problem.

The corollary to this is to record and review the purpose of the rule every time someone proposes changing it, or eliminating it altogether. That kind of wantonly absent-minded thinking is what causes every cycle of financial deregulation, speculation, bubble and crash.

That's exactly the point of the Azimov books "Foundation" to warn us about a society where we have lost the ability to understand our rules...
