A lovely question! I asked that very question in the ‘90s as the Web was emerging. Back then we made a reasonably informed estimate of it approaching a trillion SLOC. Honestly, today, I suspect the number is as countable as the number of grains of sand on all worlds. @dcbrockhttps://twitter.com/dcbrock/status/1073339063552245761 …

.@Grady_Booch: Do you by any chance have an estimate for the number of lines of code that have been written to date?

We have yearly estimates of average programmer output in LOC as well as total number of programmers in the world, so by integrating that over time we should get an approximate number (for manually written code at least)

Yes, that is exactly where I got to in the 90’s, but I came to feel that the parameters I had were becoming wildly inaccurate.

Care to crank the numbers with me again?

My back-of-the-envelope calculation gets to 5.5e12 LOC, which seems low (only 5.5x growth compared in 30 years ago?)

Yeah, that smells way off. Nonetheless, I think there is little doubt it is a whopping big number.

I’d love to see that envelope! Can you share your reasoning?
