reflective pattern recognition is comforting because it suggests "this leads to that" tidiness in what most see as an uncomfortably untidy world. in general its okay to do that unless you plan on using the false pattern to dictate your behavior & decisions in the present.

With history we can not check if narrative is correct. In science we can check it by repeating experiments and calculating uncertainty.

This is also what we do when we look at our own individual pasts. It seems to fit into a narrative whereas what was actually happening to us was quite unstructured!
