I've managed to attend zero invitation-only parties this year at NeurIPS. I think invite-only social events hinder diversity, since you need to already be an insider in order to further network with other insiders. Social events should be networking opportunities for everyone!
If your organization claims to be pro-diversity, then it shouldn't be organizing invitation-only events where invites are only handed out to friends of staff & high-status people. I understand that space is an issue, but you can just start bouncing people when your space is full.
Social inclusion dynamics are not going to magically change if everything you do keeps reinforcing the old networks...
Maybe you should host an event and try that ;)
To be fair, a lot of #NeurIPS2018 parties required tickets (to control numbers and avoid turning people away at the door) but not an invite from an insider. The NVIDIA, Element AI, Huawei, Borealis AI and SportLogiq parties were all on Eventbrite
