I've managed to attend zero invitation-only parties this year at NeurIPS. I think invite-only social events hinder diversity, since you need to already be an insider in order to further network with other insiders. Social events should be networking opportunities for everyone!

If your organization claims to be pro-diversity, then it shouldn't be organizing invitation-only events where invites are only handed out to friends of staff & high-status people. I understand that space is an issue, but you can just start bouncing people when your space is full.

Social inclusion dynamics are not going to magically change if everything you do keeps reinforcing the old networks...

Tbh, you don't need to go to these parties to network anymore. It would be harder for new comers to pass on such opportunities.

Random invitation only parties would be fun, and solve the size issue

I think we should pay travel expenses to attend the NeurIPs (formerly known as NIPS) for a select few through a lottery system or maybe an election. That would be a first step towards paying for everyone to come and eventually having NeurIPs attendance be declared a human right.

Yes! Exactly! This became a bit of a pain point. Check what happened to our group at Nvidia https://twitter.com/alienelf/status/1070383201934290944?s=19 … These companies are preaching diversity but it's rife with hypocrisy

There is definitely a bunch of institution related biases at #NeurIPS2018 events which becomes a proxy for reenforcing the lack of diversity. If you work for Google then you can get into the events without tickets or invitation. I watched it happen at the @nvidia event last night

It almost feels like we pushed society towards a culture heavy in signaling and empty of commitment.
