I wish people would stop trying to justify unethical corporate behavior by saying "the company is just doing what it must to survive / dominate the market". If a company is a net negative for society, maybe it doesn't need to survive, much less dominate any market.

I really think the 2020s will see the rise of a new corporate culture where the public, employees, and executives all understand that profits do not justify all means, and that all companies should provide some value to society in order to justify their existence.

This would not eliminate all problems, because we can argue what means are justified to provide more value to society, but that discussion is much more useful. Especially in context of such influential technologies as AI, biotechnology, gene editing, ...

We have no reason to believe that enlightened owners and the executives will act against their class interest and bestow such a gift on the masses absent any disruptive agitation and demands from below, namely through democratic community orgs & labor unions. #DemocratizeGoogle

I think relying on public/employees/execs is overly optimistic. However, we can see that companies ending up in these situation are monopolies. Competition can avoid this because the consumer can chose what benefit them the most. Thus the solution is "just" to break monopolies.

          1. I don't think monopolies are necessarily bad for employees, because they can squeeze more money out of the employers. That's why employees at Google, VW, etc. are pretty well paid. https://twitter.com/Marcel_Arts/status/1070645010385768448?s=19 … /1

You need to accept the trade-offs though. Such cultures tend to be monopolies or oligopolies, at least on the global market. The reason that e.g. Google can treat their employees so well is that they literally have no expenses beside them, and no competition.
