"foster" empathy would be a better term. I think empathy is something that arises from situations and experience, rather than something that can be taught in a top-down fashion. (Then again, can anything ever be taught in a top-down fashion?)

Rationality has justified some of the most barbaric episodes in human history (war, genocide, slavery). Empathy has always seemed in short supply, historically speaking. “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

Someone certainly needs to teach my students to have empathy for me. 😉

I’d say yes to all of your questions. But it’d be interesting to see proofs that empathy is essential for human-level intelligence.

Without understanding how another person feels how can you efficiently communicate with him? Intelligence as evolved as human kind should include empathy.

For humans, I think it might be enough to be intelligent. It feels counterintuitive, but empathy causes bias and weakens resource deployment efficiency. Empathy creates additional suffering for both the one employing it *and* for the forgotten suffering millions.

Bias is inherent. It's simply exists. To deny it exists is irresponsible. Why does it exist? All models are imperfect. We use tools such as empathy & intellect to consciously counteract bias. Empathy is a form of intellect, developed through knowledge & experience.

How (or why) did empathy become divorced from intellect? Or was I naïve or incorrect in assuming the concepts were ever intertwined? I find the absence of empathy to be the height of ignorance; what MLK called a dangerous "sincere" ignorance, & conscientious stupidity.
