Imagine having the privilege of being personally unaffected by politics in 2018https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1059801851309232129 …

Elections are important but, no matter who wins, 99.9999 percent of your daily life and existence will be completely unaffected by the results today. Just a bit of perspective.

This should be an aspirational goal: may we build a society where everyone would be largely unaffected by politics -- where every citizen's fundamental rights would be widely agreed upon (and would encompass access to healthcare, etc). It would be wonderful.

My text messages were full (no exaggeration) of well meaning friends (I don't say that with condescension) saying they didn't feel the need to vote because they didn't have an opinion on some contrived thing X. All I did was send them this https://www.mkgandhi.org/gquots1.htm

You're kidding, right? US policy is decided by who is in power. I live half a world away from the US, and I KNOW who's in power there is the difference between the world being livable in 20 years time or not. I'd have to leave the planet to get away from the consequences

It’s quite the privilege, it’s called optimism. The best part is, anyone can have that privilege.

He's more or less right though. The situation is such that, given the political options available and the social status quo, even for those outside of the privileged minority (or especially for them) the outcome of an election will change very few things.
