In English, it has come to refer to an exchange of favors with expectation of reciprocity, with connotations of corruption. In French, it's a situational misunderstanding: mistaking a thing for another.

"Quid pro quo" has completely different meanings in English and French, which I've always found interesting given it's a Latin phrase. Literally, it means "something for something", and Latin speakers used it to mean "substitute" -- using one thing in place of another.

terrific in English has a positive connotation compared to Italian where it's negative. Or Terrible in french compared to English and Italian has a similar flipped meaning I guess?
