Wish Twitter would remove the "reply" button, not the "like" button. That, and actually blocking the propaganda bots, would solve the toxicity problem instantly...

I think removing the possibility for answers is maybe a bit overdone. However, I think it would make sense to give Tweeters the possibility to moderate replies. (And provide great handy tools for that)

You can always answer by posting your own opinions in your own feed. Why should other posters give you a platform? Moderating replies would work, but that is very work intensive. Presumably most people wouldn't want to do that.
